156. IS THERE DOUBLE PUNISHMENT FOR THE PROPHET?
In this verse 17:75 Allah says: “…then had we made you taste a double (punishment) of living and a double (punishment) of dying…”
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had said “I experience two-fold agony” when he became ill during his last days (Bukhari 5648, 5660, 5667)
Certain people assume that it is against Quran.
In this verse Allah signifies only about the two-fold punishment that he would give to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).
That punishing the pious souls with manifold agonies in this world for testing them and for rewarding them greatly in the Hereafter, would not be against this verse. Many Prophets including Prophet Ayyoob (pbuh) had experienced not two-fold but even manifold agonies in this world. There are evidences in Quran which will prove this.
Moreover in this Quranic verse Allah signifies as ‘in this world’ and ‘in the Hereafter’. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had experienced two-fold agonies in this world only. He would not be given such agony in the Hereafter.
Hence only if we said that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) experienced two-fold agonies in this world and in the Hereafter we contradict this verse.
