57. THE MONTHS OF HAJJ
It may be viewed by certain people that—while Hajj is performed in a single month, why then it has been said as 'months' in plural form in the Quranic verse 2:197.
We have mentioned in the previous explanatory note (56) that there are three ways to perform Hajj. We have also mentioned that the third one is Tamathuv.
Those who perform Hajj in this way (Tamathuv) can carry out Umra by wearing Ihram in the month of 'Shawwal' itself and after completing umra they can stay in Makka. After their stay there for two months (Shawwal and Dhul Qa’dah) they can perform Hajj by wearing Ihram, when the month of Hajj begins.
Since those who perform Hajj in this way (Tamathuv) spend three months for that purpose, it is said as known months in plural form.
We are able to get such interpretation from Hadith. So, it is clear that Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) elucidation is essential if we have to understand Quran.
