64. OATHS TO BE FULFILLED
Whoever takes an oath to carry out a work permitted in the religion, he ought to fulfill that. If he did not accomplish that task he should atone for the same as in the verse 5:89, otherwise if would be a punishable offence.
Some people might say inadvertently as “I take oath on Allah …” without intending a pledge in the name of Allah. Allah would not punish them as they had not intended an oath, while uttering those words.
It should not be assumed that the utterance of the Quran, “I take oath on Allah” is a license given in Islam either deceive others or to defend themselves. Since, Allah has said in other verse that it is an offence to utter that way.
(Refer Quran 2:224, 225, 3:77, 16:91, 16:92, 16:94, 58:16, and 63:2)
Those who would use the name of Allah either to deceive others without repayment of debts or to avoid difficulties that might occur, should reform themselves by reading these verses.
Uttering falsehood while taking oath on Allah and making Him a witness and not fulfilling a promise, is a severe offence.
